Now that he's 47 years old, he's still the only full-time worker at his sword-making factory. Every day he works by the forge sweating in the 7000C temperatures. Kuo said a good sword should be forged over 100 times, sometimes in temperatures as high as 13000C. After taking up his father's blacksmith shop in his 20s, Kuo soon became famous in south Taiwan for his knife-making skills. He is one of the few workers who is able to produce full sets of Taoist traditional weapons used in local temple His love of ancient swords and knives then prompted him to go to Japan for eight years and learn sword making, especially the multiple-layered steel wrapping technique that he developed and which dates back to the Warring States period(403 to 221BC.). What makes the discovery interesting is that cultures such as China and England (though neither country formally existed during this period) discovered the technique and used similar methods, though neither society had much, if any, contact with the other. Despite the modern day aesthetic appeal of Pattern Welding, the technique was originally created to deal with a very practical problem. The issue at hand was the brittle nature of the ancient world's steel. To strengthen the steel, ancient sword smiths found that by twisting iron and steel together they could reinforce the blade of both knives and swords. The blade could be further strengthened by using the layers of twisted steel and iron over a steel core. This layering also helped to purify the steel that was being used as well as strengthen the steel. Once the practical aspects of the technique had been achieved smiths found that they could manipulate the steel and iron to also achieve an aesthetic beauty in the blades. For over 1,000 years pattern welding was used in the ancient world. However, the invention of the blast furnace ended the practical use of pattern welding. Over the centuries the technique was lost, and only recently made a reemergence. Today the technique has come back into popularity due to the skill the technique requires and the beauty of the blade produced. These first Tantos were almost always used as functional weapons and as a result did not have much have much artistic quality. Another result of the their functional use was that not many survived from this period. It was during this time, and the years up until the 16th century, that the Tanto was worn with the Tachi as the Daisho of the Samurai. Women would also sometimes wear a smaller version of the Tanto in their Obi for self defense. This is a reproduction inspired by the ornate Tantos of the Late Edo period, named Asuka. The Tanto has been authentically forged with meticulous attention to detail. All the fittings and materials used in the Tantos construction are genuine materials. The Tanto is full tang and comes razor sharp. Attributes of the Weapon: Blade: The blade of the sword has been constructed in a Kobuse Lamination. In this style a medium carbon steel is used in the core of the blade. Wrapped over the core steel is high carbon steel. The two grades of steel are fused seamlessly together in a process called Tsukurikomi, this is a meticulous and painstaking process requiring the skill of a master smith. If there is any opening or crack in the steel the blade is rendered useless and the blade must be reforged. Further more, to insure a hard cutting edge, the blade has been treated with a clay covering. This allows the blade to be differentially heated and cooled so that the edge is significantly harder than the rest of the blade and retains a sharper edge. The Tanto has been forged in the Unokubi-Tsukuri style with a single edge, straight back, and a raised Shinogi that tapers to the Mune. The Mune ends at the O-Kissake. A Bo-Hi has been added to the beginning of the Shinogi. The blade is full tang and comes razor sharp. Saya: The Saya has been constructed from hard wood with a deep burgundy lacquered high gloss finish and golden highlights.
